What this page is not

AVORA has no forum, no user group and no community, because it has no users. This page instead sets out how to judge the financial communities that do exist, which is the more useful thing.

Reading financial advice online

Four questions cut through most of it:

  • Who profits if you act on this? Affiliate links on comparison sites usually decide the ranking.
  • Is the figure gross or net of fees? Most quoted returns are gross.
  • Is it a rate or a spread? 'No fees' almost always means the cost is in the rate.
  • When was it written? Rates, limits and regulations move; a two-year-old comparison is fiction.

Sources worth preferring

Regulators' own registers and consumer pages, published rate cards read directly from the provider rather than summarised, and central bank mid-market rates. All three are free, none of them are trying to convert you, and together they answer most questions a forum thread will not.
